Guy Higashi from Pacific Rim Bible College in Hawaii is visiting CCCLiVE.TV from Sept 1-6th and will be teaching an intensive Bible Collge subject while he is here. Below are the details of the course.
The Bible in Pop Culture
We live in an age where film, television, music, and media are the mediums that express culture, but the question remains, how do we encourage people to encounter Christ in a way that touches their hearts and minds? Karl Barth encourages us to preach the gospel with the Bible in one hand and the newspaper in the other. The course will introduce students to the theological and social dimensions that shape the contemporary and popular culture through the lenses of thoughtful biblical reflection. In this way, we can more effectively exegete culture and seek innovative ways to reach the world with Christ.
Course Outcome Objectives
Through the surveying of movies, music, television shows, other media arts, and class lectures, students will by the end of the course students will:
- Gain a broad understanding of both the structure and social contexts of popular communications mediums;
- Gain an understanding of what the bible has to say about the arts and culture;
- Be equipped to engage biblically with the movies, music, and media of today’s popular culture; and
- Understand the ways in which popular film, music, and television influences and shapes the contemporary church and worship life.
